Unfortunately, there are no known pharmaceuticals or herbal remedies known to stop or cure Coronavirus. However, it is possible to improve your general health and to boost your immune system in order to improve the immune response against viral infections by means of herbal remedies and through healthy nutrition and lifestyle.
There are several antiviral and immune-boosting herbs that can be used. It is essential to understand that I’m not claiming that there are herbs that will actively fight the virus or that they will prevent the infection altogether. Having a strong immune system and a healthy organism will, however, help against it by improving your own body’s response against viral infections.
So, what herbal remedies can be used?
A healthy immune function can be increased through the use of herbs such as Astragalus, Echinacea, and Elder (Sambucus nigra). Because stress highly affects the immune system, it is also necessary to address this issue with nervine herbs such as Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora).
Antiviral herbs are obviously strongly indicated, especially Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), which has been used to contrast the SARS-group of viruses. Some other antiviral herbs are Garlic, Ginger, and Thyme.
What we know specifically about Covid-19 is that it causes a pneumonia-like condition and that, as other SARS-group viruses, attaches to what are called angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) linkages on the surface of cells. ACE-2 is an integral membrane protein found on many cells throughout the body and its linkages are the entry point for the virus infection of cellular tissues.
Therefore, if we want to strengthen the body specifically for such a threat, it is essential to use herbs that will help prevent damage to the lungs, such as Hawthorn (Crataegus spp) and Rhodiola (Rhodiola is known to prevent hypoxia-induced oxidative damage), and herbs that either prevent viral attachments to Ace-2 linkages or protect them. Among those we find the already mentioned Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), as well as Horse Chestnut and Gingko biloba.
Please note that not all herbal remedies are suitable for everybody because there are contraindications and interactions, so please contact me or another qualified herbalist before taking any herbs.
I remain at your disposal to supply a formula that includes most of the mentioned herbs, as well as to provide a consultation where you can get all the specifically tailored advice to boost your immune system and to cleanse and strengthen your organism.
